The Solent Life Review

           COOKING UP A STORM

Two great food events are taking place in the Solent Life area at the end of September and first off all things fishy will be celebrated during a Fish Fayre at The Ship Inn at Langstone near Hayling Island and then two of the best kitchen brigades in the region will be battling each other for culinary glory… As well as cookery demos to show how to bone, fillet and cook fish, visitors to the Ship Inn can taste a variety of fish dishes, shellfish and locally caught fish. Visitors can also ‘have a go’ at filleting for themselves under the expert guidance of local fisherman Ian Griffiths from Solent Fish.
There will be plenty to do for the kids as they can enter the crabbing and colouring competitions of Chichester Harbour’s ‘celebrity’ seal and to keep you all entertained there’ll also be live music from Grounghog. The Ship’s manager Rita Delahunty told Solent Life “This free family event is all about promoting sustainable fish, with lots of fishy fun and activities thrown in for adults and children alike. We want people to come along and try lots of different fish, get lots of recipe ideas and see how easy it is to cook with fish, and have a fun afternoon.”
The Fish Fayre is on Saturday 25th September from 11.30am-3.30pm, and runs during British Food Fortnight. Admission is free. The Ship is at Langstone Road, Langstone, Havant. Tel 023 92471719.

LAINSTON HOUSE V HOTEL DU VIN: HEAD CHEFS GO HEAD TO HEAD FOR CHARITY

Solent Life foodies have the chance to enjoy culinary theatre at its best, watching teams of top chefs from Lainston House and Hotel du Vin Winchester battling it out in a ‘Ready, Steady, Cook-style’ Charity Chefs’ Challenge.  As the teams, headed by Lainston House Executive Chef and Hampshire Fare Director Andy MacKenzie and Head Chef Adam Fargin at Hotel du Vin, go head to head, members of the audience get to vote for their favourite dishes, as in the popular TV show that inspired the event. A few lucky individuals will be invited to join the top table to sample each dish for themselves.    The Challenge will be raising money for three good causes. Half the proceeds will go to Wave 105’s ‘Cash for Kids’ appeal, 25% to Macmillan Cancer Support and 25% to the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance.
This light-hearted fundraising event is at Thornden Hall Performing Arts Centre in Chandler’s Ford on Thursday 30th September from 7pm. Tickets cost £25, which includes a welcome drink, delicious canapés during the interval plus a goody bag to take home. For tickets call Jan Ward on 023 8024 6555 or email hall@thornden.hants.sch.uk.
